140248 Persons Signed the Petition

Globally 3.6 million infants die before they reach their first birthday and millions are malnourished because of inadequate and inappropriate breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices during this period. According to WHO and UNICEF, enhancing early breastfeeding within one hour of birth and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, good complementary feeding thereafter along with continued breastfeeding till 2 years or beyond are among the most effective interventions to save babies’ lives and prevent malnutrition.

For this, women need to be supported!

And having that support requires YOUR VOICES !!

To get to know peoples’ voices and opinions we did online surveys and asked two key questions. These polls have been conducted through the ONE MILLION CAMPAIGN- Support Women to Breastfeed www.onemillioncampaign.org

To the question, what would help women to start breastfeeding within 1 hour of birth, we have 86% people saying that women need comprehensive support by health workers to achieve early breastfeeding within one hour.

Information during pregnancy 5%
Doctor"s Support 2%
Assistance at the time of birth 6%
All of above 86%
None of above 1%

To another question, What would help women practice Exclusive Breastfeeding for 6 months? 80% of people said that women require all kind of support including maternity benefits and work place support.

Maternity benefits (leave or cash benefits) 3%
Support by a trained health workers 6%
Family Support 9%
All of above 80%
None of above 0%

Considering YOUR voices and opinions it is logical to continue to run the ONE MILLION CAMPAIGN- Support Women to Breastfeed as a rolling petition to world leaders and keep up pressure on them to provide support systems for women.

To world leaders:

As citizens, we call for a stop to commercial interference in infant nutrition, the strict implementation of the International Code for Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and ensuring support for women to breastfeed. We urge you to create/implement legislation that restricts infant milk manufacturers from promoting their products as breastmilk substitutes/baby foods, to have a budgeted plan of action to promote and support women for optimal breastfeeding and to ensure breastfeeding friendly workplaces with adequate nursing breaks in the public and private sector so that working women are not forced to abandon breastfeeding.
